Bretton Woods, NH – Two champions finished the week in impressive fashion as Grey Gagnon and Mady Savary claimed the Boys and Girls Division titles at the New Hampshire Junior Amateur Championship at Mt. Washington Resort Golf Club. Gagnon rallied from an early deficit to secure the Boys Division crown and earn an exemption into the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, later this month, while Savary overcame a rocky start in the final round to complete a wire-to-wire victory in the Girls Division.
Over three days, the championship showcased the state’s top junior golfers, with both champions demonstrating resilience and consistency to separate themselves from the field.
Boys Division
Grey Gagnon entered the final round with a one-shot lead, but the championship quickly became a battle. Playing alongside Gagnon, Tucker Roberto came out firing, birdieing four of his first six holes to reach 4-under on the day. Meanwhile, Gagnon stumbled with a double bogey on the par-3 fifth hole, briefly falling one shot behind.
Rather than panic, Gagnon settled in. He said, “I had a little hiccup on 5 that put me down 1. After that I think I just tried to stay positive, and I was able to make a couple birdies. From there I played pretty well and was able to close it out.”
Gagnon answered with birdies during the middle portion of his round before delivering perhaps the tournament’s biggest moment with another birdie on the par-4 15th, extending his advantage to three strokes with three holes remaining.
“I think after the birdie on 15, that put me up 3 with 3 to play and I knew if I didn’t make any mistakes, I would probably have it,” he said.
Gagnon closed with a 4-under-par 68 to finish the championship at 13-under-par 203, four shots clear of Roberto. The victory caps an outstanding week in which Gagnon posted rounds of 66-69-68, the only player to finish double digits under par.
“I think my wedges have gotten a lot better over last year and on a course like this, that’s really important,” Gagnon said. “So, I think that’s helped me, along with putting, which was pretty good this week.”
Roberto finished runner-up at 9-under after a final-round 69, while Zach Nelson made the biggest move on the final day, firing his tournament-best matching 68 to finish third at 5-under.
With the victory, Gagnon earns an exemption into the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, to be contested later this month at Saucon Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania.
Girls Division
Mady Savary’s final round didn’t begin the way she envisioned. The overnight leader opened with a bogey on the first hole and a double bogey on the second, briefly opening the door for the chasing field. Instead of letting the early mistakes derail her round, Savary regrouped and steadily regained control of the championship.
“I started off not that great, but I just tried to keep calm,” Savary said. “One of my coaches before the round told me that if I get any doubles, just remember there’s a lot more golf. So, I really kept that in mind. I was able to fight back.”
Savary settled in over the remaining holes, limiting further damage and carding a final-round 73 to finish at 5-under-par 211, completing three rounds for an under-par total of 211 (-5).
Her consistency throughout the week proved to be the difference, as she finished 12 strokes ahead of runner-up Josie LeFebvre. She tated, “I’ve always felt pretty confident about my ball striking. That’s the part of my game that’s felt really consistent. And right now, it’s just really helping my game a lot. And my putting, I’ve been working on for a while now and I think it’s really starting to pay off.”
Finishing under par for all three rounds marked another milestone in Savary’s development. She commented, “Being under for three days is really great for me and I don’t think I’ve done that before so it’s giving me a lot of confidence.”
Savary finished 12 shots clear of the field, with Josie LeFebvre claiming runner-up honors at 7-over-par after rounds of 75-72-76. Hadley Hill finished third at 23-over, while Madelyn Giampa placed fourth at 30-over. Naw Whar completed the top five at 36-over, followed by Kendall Wishart in sixth. Norah Fleming finished seventh, and Amy Duff rounded out the championship field in eighth.
