Canterbury, NH – Home course advantage paid off for Colby Pope, who carded a 1-under-par 71 to earn medalist honors at the New Hampshire Amateur Qualifier held at Canterbury Woods Country Club. Nineteen players, who shot 78 (+6) or better, advanced from the field to secure spots in next month’s New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Davis & Towle Insurance with support from Johnnie Walker.
Pope, representing Canterbury Woods, put together a steady round that began on the back nine and showcased his resilience after an early double bogey. He opened his round on the par-5 10th hole with a birdie but faltered a little on the next hole. His resilience shined through as he made back-to-back birdies right after the double bogey. After pouring in another birdie putt, he made the turn at 1-under-par. Pope’s back nine consisted of three birdies and three bogey to finish his round at 1-under-par to secure his spot atop the leaderboard and into the New Hampshire Amateur.
In a four-way tie for second place at even-par 72 were Matt Gifford (Stonebridge CC), Chris Kelly (Lake Sunapee CC), Scott Underhill (Canterbury Woods), and Carter Browning (Youth on Course). All posted consistent rounds to comfortably qualify.
A trio of players, Braden Kiley (Manchester CC), Ryan Martel (Rochester CC), and Joshua Pabst (Owl’s Nest GC), finished one shot back at 1-over 73, rounding out the top ten.
The cut to qualify ended up at 78 (+6), with 19 players advancing with the final spot determined in a hole-by-hole playoff. River Richer grabbed the final spot into the State Amateur on the first playoff hole.
The New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Davis & Towle Insurance with will be held July 7–12 at Rochester Country Club, where these qualifiers will compete for one of the most prestigious titles in New Hampshire amateur golf. The next and final qualifier on the road to Rochester will be held on Monday, June 30th at The Oaks Golf Links.
