Concord, NH – Andrew Surprenant and James Shattuck capped a championship day at Beaver
Meadow Golf Course by defeating Matt Steckowych and Craig Steckowych, 4 and 3, in the final of the
Four-Ball Match Play Championship.
Four teams remained when the day began, with the morning’s 18-hole semifinal matches determining
the two teams that would advance to the championship match. Surprenant and Shattuck, the No. 7
seed, defeated No. 6 Moquin and Duhamel, 2 and 1, to earn their spot in the final.
On the other side of the bracket, the No. 13 Steckowych team continued its run through the
championship bracket by defeating top-seeded Stevens and Quelch, 1 up, to reach the final.
The final was tightly contested through the opening three holes, with the teams deadlocked through the
third. Surprenant and Shattuck took the lead on the fourth hole and gradually built their advantage
throughout the middle portion of the match. After holding a 2-up lead through 10 holes, the Beaver
Meadow pairing won the 12th hole to move 3 up before extending the lead to 4 up on the 15th hole.
That proved to be enough, as Surprenant and Shattuck closed out the championship, 4 and 3.
Playing the championship at Beaver Meadow provided an added level of comfort for the winners.
Andrew Surprenant said “It was nice to play our home course. We felt really comfortable going out there
today. Being here today made it just feel like another round.”
The morning semifinal also proved valuable preparation for the championship match. He added that
“having that 18 hole match in the morning gave us a real good feel for the way the course was set up.
Everything felt very familiar after that first round.”
Shattuck credited the team’s ability to consistently create scoring opportunities throughout the two
matches. He remembered, “We hit a lot of great shots today, and we had a ton of birdie putts that we
were able to capitalize on.”
Against the Steckowych team, Shattuck knew his team would need to stay aggressive to keep pace. He
said, “We knew that playing the Steckowych team wouldn’t be easy. We had to be aggressive because we
knew they would be making pars and birdies, and we couldn’t just wait for a mistake.”
A pivotal moment came early in the championship match when Surprenant made an eagle on the fourth
hole, helping the team take its first lead of the afternoon. Shattuck said, “After Andrew’s eagle on the 4th
hole, we were able to get that lead and never look back.”
The victory capped a full day of match play at Beaver Meadow, with Surprenant and Shattuck navigating
two 18-hole matches to claim the Four-Ball Match Play Championship. The team of Steckowych and
Steckowych finished as the championship match runners-up after making a deep run through the
bracket, including the semifinal victory over the tournament’s top-seeded team.
