Bretton Woods, NH – The opening round of the New Hampshire Junior Championship got underway Monday at the picturesque Mt. Washington Resort Golf Club, where New Hampshire’s top junior golfers teed off under sunny skies and championship conditions. After 18 holes, Braden Kiley of Bedford and Teagan Nadeau of Lee sit atop the leaderboards in the Boys and Girls Divisions, respectively. With 36 holes left in the competition, they will need to keep their golf and mental games strong to fend off the strong competition who sit right behind them on the leaderboards.
Kiley delivered a standout performance with a 5-under-par 67, showcasing poise and precision throughout the round. He took full advantage of the course’s par-5s, making birdie on all three at Mt. Washington, and closed strong with his sixth birdie of the day on the 18th green.
“I thought I played pretty solid out there,” said Kiley. “Starting out the round I didn’t have too many putts that fell, but once I got to the par-5s I was really able to take advantage of them. And I was happy to get that last putt to drop on 18.”
He leads by two strokes over fellow Bedford native Henry DuBois, who carded a 3-under 69. A tightly grouped trio, Gavin Richardson (Concord), Ty Lefebvre (Manchester), and Ryan Allard (Exeter), sit just one shot further back at 2-under-par 70. And rounding out those who were in the red numbers for Round 1 is Carter Browning who shot 1-under-par 71, setting up a competitive second round on Tuesday.
In the Girls Division, Teagan Nadeau posted a 7-over 79 to claim a one-shot lead heading into Round 2. While not her cleanest round, her resilience and wedge play kept her in control. Although Nadeau stumbled a little on the front nine, carding a five-over-par 41, she bounced back strong with her consistency on the back nine to keep herself to 7-over-par.
“To be honest, I kind of left a lot out there,” said Nadeau. “But I was able to hit a lot of good wedge shots to keep myself in it. I’m definitely looking to make some more putts tomorrow.”
Just one shot back is Josie Lefebvre of Manchester, who posted an 80 and remains in strong position to contend. Opposite of Nadeau, Lefebvre posted a strong front nine but ran into some trouble on the nine. Both Nadeau and Lefebvre will look to improve on the nines they struggled on as they head into the second round.
Rounding out the field are Maria Tribou (91), Kendall Wishart (94), Norah Fleming (96), and Kailee Pendleton (99), all looking to improve in Tuesday’s second round to work their way closer to the leaders.
With dramatic mountain views and momentum building, the stage is set for an exciting second round of the New Hampshire Junior Championship at Mt. Washington Resort.
