Keene, NH – The third of seven qualifiers for the 123rd New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Davis & Towle Insurance was contested Wednesday at Keene Country Club, where nine players earned their way into next month’s championship at Cochecho Country Club. Bretwood Golf Course’s Taylor Miller paced the field, carding a 1-under-par 71 to earn medalist honors and become the only player to finish under par for the day.
Miller wasted little time getting into red figures, opening his round with a birdie on the 1st hole before adding three more birdies over the opening nine holes. His lone blemish on the front side came at the par-4 4th, where a double bogey briefly stalled his momentum, but he recovered nicely to make the turn at 2-under-par. On the back nine, Miller mixed two birdies with three bogeys to close out a steady 71 (-1).
“It was a fun round,” said Miller. “I had putts going pretty well but I missed a couple short one. I was just recovering well and not making too many mistakes.”
Miller credited his familiarity with Keene Country Club, which serves as the home course for his college team, for helping him navigate the layout. He stated, “This is my home course for my college team, so I know my way around a little bit. It’s not the longest course so it suits me, I don’t hit the ball super far.”
Now with his sights set on Cochecho Country Club for next month’s New Hampshire Amateur, Miller has a practice round in his plans as he looks to prepare for the championship.
Mitchell Cormier of NH Golf e-Club and Nate Stevens of Passaconaway Country Club shared second place at even-par 72, while Ranger Stone of Bretwood Golf Course finished alone in fourth after posting a 2-over-par 74. Keene Country Club members Byron O’Brien and Sam Fuller tied for fifth at 3-over-par 75, and fellow Keene member Rick Coons secured the seventh qualifying position with a 4-over-par 76.
The final two spots into the championship were determined in a playoff after Tim Garnham of Eastman Golf Links and Alden Gibson of NH Golf e-Club each finished regulation at 5-over-par 77. Both players successfully advanced through the playoff to complete the group of nine qualifiers headed to Cochecho Country Club.
The 123rd New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Davis & Towle Insurance will be contested July 6-11 at Cochecho Country Club in Dover.
