Rye, NH – Mady Savary continued her impressive summer of golf Tuesday, maintaining her lead through 36 holes of the New Hampshire Women’s Amateur Championship presented by Vigilant Wealth Management at Abenaqui Country Club.
Fresh off a personal-best 67 in Monday’s opening round, Savary followed it with a steady 1-under-par 71 to reach 6-under-par for the championship. The reigning New Hampshire Girls’ Junior Champion will take an eleven-shot advantage into Wednesday’s final round as she looks to capture her first New Hampshire Women’s Amateur title.
Savary wasted little time extending her lead, making three birdies through her first six holes to reach 3-under for the day. A pair of bogeys on holes 7 and 8 briefly slowed her momentum, sending her to the turn at 1-under-par, before she settled into a consistent rhythm with an even-par back nine.
“I started out three under through front nine and then I had two bogeys which were just three putts, and I should have made the putts,” Savary said. “The back nine I kind of scrambled in the beginning. I had to get up and down a couple times but then I found my groove and was able to get on the greens.”
One of the highlights of her round came late in the day on the par-3 16th, where she converted a birdie to add another cushion to her lead. She said, “I had a good birdie on 16, I had a nice little tap in on the par 3 so that was great and gave me motivation. I just needed to par the last two and I would be happy with the round today.”
While Savary remains in control, the chase behind her continues as Abenaqui Country Club member June Doerr put together one of the day’s top rounds.
After opening with a 76 on Monday, Doerr improved by three shots with a 1-over-par 73 to move into solo second place. She battled through a challenging front nine at 3-over-par before catching fire on the second nine, playing it in 2-under-par, highlighted by a clutch birdie on the par-4 17th hole.
“I had a little bit of rough front nine, I made a few mistakes that I wasn’t happy about,” Doerr said. “But I was able to get it back, get my groove on the back nine and it ended up being a pretty solid and a pretty fun round.”
Playing on her home course, Doerr will look to carry that momentum into Wednesday’s championship finale. She commented, “I just want to have fun. It’s summer, I’m heading into my junior year of college and I just want to have fun.”
Savary knows the final round will bring added pressure with the championship within reach, but she plans to rely on the same formula that has carried her through the opening two rounds.
“I just have the same plan as I did today and yesterday,” Savary said. “I just want to get it in the fairways, on the greens and make some putts but sometimes they’re not going to drop and I have to be okay with that. Having a good mental game will help me as well. I know there’s going to be pressure as the leader but I just need to be confident with my swing.”
With one round remaining, Savary stands just 18 holes away from adding another championship to what has already been a breakout month. The final round begins Wednesday morning at Abenaqui Country Club, where the field will look to chase down the tournament leader while Savary attempts to complete her wire-to-wire victory.
