Concord, NH – The Four Ball Match Play Championship teed off in dominant and dramatic fashion during the Round of 16, with top-seeded teams making strong statements and several matches going down to the wire at Beaver Meadow Golf Course.
The team of Andrew Surprenant and James Shattuck, the #1 seed following a stellar qualifying round, wasted no time asserting their status as tournament favorites. They rolled to a commanding 8 & 7 victory over Nichols/Hansly, setting the tone for a high-level day of competition. Together, Surprenant and Shattuck carded five birdies on the opening nines holes of their match to make the turn at 6up over their competitors. With two more dominating holes, they closed out the match on their 11th hole.
One of the morning’s most thrilling matches came from the 8/9 pairing, where Todd and Garner edged out Browning and Cameron in a playoff after the match was tied through 18 holes. Todd/Garner emerged victorious on the 19th hole, punching their ticket to the Quarterfinals.
On the same side of the bracket, #4 seeds Hamel and Gover advanced with a confident 3 & 2 win over Gavin/McIlvene. Hamel and Gover got themselves to 3up after 7 but let that lead slip as Gavin/McIlvene won three-straight holes to get back to tied in the match. Hamel and Gover regained control and confidently closed out the match on their 16th hole. Meanwhile #5 seeds Cilley and Mahan outlasted Pollakoff/Cappuccilli 2 & 1, setting up a competitive Quarterfinal clash between the 4 and 5 seeds.
On the lower half of the bracket, #2 seed Mulkern and Wilson handled business efficiently, defeating Anderson/Foye 5 & 4, while #10 seeds Gibson and Germano delivered an upset over Porter/Moore with a 4 & 2 win.
#3 seed Stevens and Phinney moved through to the Quarterfinals convincingly, dispatching Wallace/Cowette 4 & 3. The match was tied for much of their first nine holes until Stevens and Phinney rolled in a birdie putt on their 9th hole to go 1up. From there, they never let up, closing out the match on their 15th hole. The #6 team of Dichard and Lane completed the day with a 3 & 2 victory over Turner/Bouchard to round out the Quarterfinal field.
The Championship Flight Quarterfinals are set to tee off Thursday, July 31st, with Surprenant/Shattuck facing Todd/Garner, and the remaining matches promising plenty of fireworks as teams chase a spot in the Semifinals.
