Concord, NH – Persistent rain couldn’t dampen the intensity as teams teed it up Thursday in the Quarterfinal round of the Four Ball Match Play Championship at Beaver Meadow Golf Course. Despite soggy conditions, the competition remained fierce with defending champions, top seeds, and underdogs all delivering thrilling performances.
Mat Gover and Russell Hamel, the defending champions, handled the rain with poise and control. The duo overcame tough competitors Jim Cilley and Mike Mahan 2 & 1 to earn a spot into the Semifinals, on the hunt for a second Four Ball Match Play title. They will go up against the top seeded team of James Shattuck and Andrew Serprenant who also won their Quarterfinal match 2 & 1.
Surprenant and Shattuck did not get off to the strong start they hoped they would. After losing the 2nd hole at Beaver Meadow to Connor Todd and Ben Garner, the duo got themselves in a hole as they were 1 down and then lost the 4th hole to go 2 down, needing to work their way back in the match. They started to turn things around on the 7th hole as they won it with a birdie and then went on to win the 8th hole to get back to tied. From there, they won the 10th hole with a birdie and never looked back, closing out the match on the 17th hole for a spot into the Semifinals.
No. 2 seeds Dan Mulkern and Brett Wilson also struggled to get momentum going early in the front nine, but never let their opponents, Daimon Gibson and Nick Germano, get too far ahead. As they made the turn to the back nine, Mulkern and Wilson began to pull ahead and extended their lead in the match the further they went into the back nine. The match ultimately ended on the 14th hole with Mulkern and Wilson winning in dominant fashion, 5 & 4.
The biggest upset of the day came from Ricky Dichard and Steve Lane, who took down the experienced team of Mark Stevens and Ryan Phinney 1 up in a tightly contested Quarterfinal battle. Stevens and Phinney seemed to have control of the match early on but at times would let Dichard and Lane back in. The deciding factor in the match came down to the final three holes where Dichard and Lane took control. They won the 16th hole to get back to 1 down, won 17th hole to tie the match and ended up winning the 18th hole with a par for a spot into the Semifinals.
The stage is now set for the highly anticipated Semfinal matches and Final match, set to take place August 27th, back at Beaver Meadow.
